While the tradition initially began only with children bringing a 'Munch' chocolate, devotees of all ages now gift the Nestle brand chocolate bar to presiding deity, known locally known as 'Munch Murugan'. The origin of the chocolate-offering ritual, which differs from the usual gifts, or 'prasadam', such as flowers and sandalwood paste, is unknown.
