But let me ask you this… When two athletes get ready to go to war and they’re equal in skill, who will win? If you said, “The guy in better shape,” you’ve nailed it. It doesn’t matter how skilled you are, if you gas out or get overpowered, you’re going to lose. Even if you simply train for fun, what’s more fun… Getting tapped out all the time and losing to less experienced guys or being able to pull off all of your skills and train forever and still be hungry for more? But to be an MMA fighter requires a lot of dedication – often 5, 6 or even 7 days a week of training. This makes it hard to fit your strength and conditioning workouts in, even though you know how crucial they are to training and fighting at your potential. And most workout plans you find require 3, 4 or even 5 workouts per week – impossible to stick to and potentially dangerous, since you can quickly become overtrained and get an injury. On top of that, the programs you find are based on old-school methods that drain your energy, making your MMA training at best INEFFECTIVE and at worst, COUNTERPRODUCTIVE, since you’ll end up developing sloppy technique because you’re sore and you’ve already spent all of your energy working out. La Junta, CO - An aspiring MMA fighter from La Junta, who claims he was paralyzed after being arrested by the La Junta Police Department, has filed a lawsuit against the department and the arresting officer in the case. The video shows Donovan Duran hitting his back on the pavement outside the hospital after police officers got him out of the back of the car while handcuffed."The video shows how unjustly they did me that night," Duran said. "I couldn't finish it. It was too hard. Too much for me." The suit claims excessive force and brutality by officers of the department. This stems from the arrest of Donovan Duran, who was visibly intoxicated at the time and claims during the arrest that he was slammed to the ground, damaging his spinal cord. That injury resulted in his current paralysis. "Instead of walking I'd be running, I was a very active guy," he said. "My breast line down... I feel nothing. I have feeling sometimes, but I have no control over moving."Court documents say law enforcement were first called on Dec. 5, 2015 after Duran called 911 several times reporting someone was trying to enter his grandfather's home and that people were trying to kill him. At his request, an Otero County sheriff's deputy transported him to Rocky Ford and police there took him to his brother's home. While officers said he had been mouthing off and believed him to be under the influence of alcohol, they said Duran was for the most part cooperative.Later that night, La Junta police received a call from Duran's sister. The responding team knew Duran and believed he had issues with alcohol in the past and was "acting paranoid." Duran volunteered to be taken to the hospital by ambulance and was admitted.According to the suit, Duran later left the hospital without authorization and was contacted by police. So if you have a shoulder injury, you'll still be able to do your cardio. That being said, be aware of your injury and don't do anything that could make it worse.nnUse Common Sensen---------------------------------------------------------------------nnDon't cheat yourself by making lame excuses. Just because your finger hurts doesn't mean you shouldn't do your workout. On the other hand, you need to be honest about how your injury really affects you. If you have a serious injury, it's ok to cut back on the frequency and duration of your workouts or stop altogether if your doctor tells you to.nUsing common sense also applies to injury prevention. Be aware of your surroundings and know your limitations. Don't try to show off to impress someone.nnPick an Appropriate Workoutn---------------------------------------------------------------------nnIf you have a lower-extremity injury (hip, knee or ankle), you can still do low-impact cardio like swimming, rowing, arm ergometry or shadowboxing. Focus your resistance training on your upper body with exercises for your back, chest, abs and arms.nIf you have an upper-extremity injury (shoulder, elbow, wrist), you should be able to do most of your usual cardio (running, walking, biking, stair climbing) with the possible exception of the elliptical (or at least the arm portion). Additionally, exercises like lunges, squats, leg presses and dead lifts should be manageable.nnIf you have a back or neck injury, you need to be especially careful with the type of exercises you perform. Talk to your doctor about specific exercises you should be doing. Generally, swimming and recumbent biking are good ways to get your heart rate up without aggravating your exercise.nc nnSeek Proper Medical Advicen---------------------------------------------------------------------nnIf the pain persists longer than three days, go to a doctor to have him/her evaluate your injury. Always follow all advice he/she gives you as far as how long to rest it and how to slowly reintroduce your injured limb to exercise. Avoid relying on the internet as your sole source of information. A doctor's advice always trumps a site like WebMD.c nnDon't Get Discouragedn---------------------------------------------------------------------nnInjuries happen, but they don't have to mean the end of your fitness routine. It's ok to have to take a few days off to recover, but make sure you get back into your workout schedule once you're feeling better.nnAvoiding Injuryn---------------------------------------------------------------------nnTo avoid injuries in the first place, make sure you always do a proper warm up and cool down. Warm up with 5-10 minutes of light cardio or body-weight exercises and cool down with 5-10 minutes of stretching. Protect your back to prolong your jiu-jitsu career. nnEven though my back has fully recovered, I continue to do this lumbar strengthening routine at least 3-4 times a week (during rehab I did it every day). Start at level 1 and once you find your balance, you can go to level 2. Once level 2 gets too easy, you can place your feet on an elevated platform (6-8 inches) for level 3. Start with 25 reps on each side, 3 sets, then increase the number of reps to 50, 75 and once you're then 100 on each side for 3 sets. nnIf you live in Southern California and you've had reoccurring back issues, you owe it to yourself to visit the Non-Surgical Spine Care Center. Call Dr. Dave (714) 398-3535 and tell him Rener sent you. He'll take good care of you. nnIf you need a very good rehab/physical therapy clinic for lower back or anything else - shoulders, knees, wrists, etc. - go to Patty Brown Physical Therapy in El Segundo.
