Dinu Lipatti (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈdinu liˈpati]; 1 April [OS 19 March] 1917 -- 2 December 1950) was a Romanian classical pianist and composer whose career was cut short by his death from Hodgkin's disease at age 33. He was elected posthumously to the Romanian Academy. He entered the 1933 Vienna International Piano Competition but finished second, because the jury considered him too young. Alfred Cortot, who thought Lipatti should have won, resigned from the jury in protest. Lipatti subsequently studied in Paris under Cortot, Nadia Boulanger (with whom he recorded some of Brahms's Waltzes Op. 39), Paul Dukas (composition) and Charles Munch (conducting). He gave his first concert, at the École Normale, on 20 May 1935. However, three days before the concert, Paul Dukas died; in memory of Dukas, Lipatti's first piece at his concert, and the piece he first publicly performed as an adult pianist, was JS Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. Lipatti's career was interrupted by World War II. Although he continued to give concerts throughout Europe, including Nazi-occupied territories, he eventually fled his native Romania in 1943 and settled with his wife (Madeleine Cantacuzene, also a concert pianist) in Geneva, Switzerland, where he accepted the position as piano professor at the conservatory. It was at this time that the first signs of his illness emerged. At first, doctors were baffled, but in 1947 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. As a result, his public ... Less

Dinu Lipatti (1917-1950) is soloist in this recording, released in the US on the Columbia label in 1953, of "Nun komm der heiden Heiland," after Bach's BWV 659, and as transcribed for piano by Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924). This work is contained in Busoni's "Ten Chorale Preludes," KiV B27/3. I created this music video from the LP shown above, serial number ML 4633.rnrnI have included in this video (at 2:38) the May 2, 1953 Billboard magazine review of this LP. Generally speaking, I rely principally on images of the the LP (1:43) and LP jacket (3:13) in order to remove any doubt about the provenance, as well as to document the authenticity, of historically important recordings such as these.rnrnAlso from this LP:rnrnBach / Kempff / Dinu Lipatti, 1950: Siciliana (From Flute Sonata No. 2 in E flat) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeg837qilqkrn----------------------------------------------------rnMore Bach transcriptions:rnrnAlfred Brendel - Nun komm der heiden Heiland - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSX7hUTh1Ys (Even though I uploaded this video, it does not appear to be available for viewing in the US.)rnrnBach/ Busoni: Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639, Wilhelp Kempff - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_3qDIECWm0rnrnIn dir ist Freude, BWV 615 (Bach, Busoni), Paul Jacobs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw_DDlMQ46MrnrnKomm, Gott, Schopfer! The first half of the 20th century saw the rise of George Enescu, Romania's greatest composer. A child prodigy, Enescu created his first musical composition at the age of five and became an accomplished composer, violinist, pianist, conductor and teacher. The annual George Enescu Festival is held in Bucharest in his honor. Also active in this period was Dinu Lipatti, a pianist notable for his interpretations of Chopin, Mozart and Bach. Some famous postwar Romanian musicians are folk artists Maria Tănase, Tudor Gheorghe, and virtuoso of the pan flute Gheorghe Zamfir, the latter having sold over 120 million albums worldwide. Artists from Romania have recently begun to inch their way onto the international pop music scene, scoring millions of views on YouTube and selling hundreds of thousands of singles. Among the best known are Inna, Edward Maya, Akcent and Alexandra Stan. Maya's "Stereo Love" became the first number one song in Billboard's year-end Dance Airplay chart to have reached number one three times in its chart run, while competing in a line-up that included Lady Gaga. Since the 2009 release of "Stereo Love", the Bucharest-born composer has won gold and platinum albums from Canada to Spain and toured clubs as far away as India and Pakistan. Inna, the ... Less

Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983)n- Piano sonata no. 1 opus 22 (1952) in four movementsnIII. Adagio molto appassionatonPiano: Alberto PortugheisnnGinastera was born in Buenos Aires in 1916, and even in his childhood showed early promise as a performer and composer. His adolescent years were spent in formal studies at the Williams Conservatory, and within a few years of his admittance to the National Conservatory as an undergraduate, his music was receiving national acclaim in prominent performance venues. His initial reputation rested largely on his creative interpretations of and allusions to Argentinean folk materials, as realized in short-form pieces and suites, but by the late '40s and early '50s he had completed a number of more imposing works, such his Piano Sonata No. 1 and his first two string quartets. He had also ventured abroad, first to Tanglewood in 1941, where he became fast friends with Copland, then to other destinations throughout the U.S. in the late '40s, and finally to several venues in Europe during the early '50s, where works such as the Variaciones concertantes and Pampeana No. 3 enjoyed warm receptions. He likewise introduced internationally acclaimed composers to Argentina; he oversaw an ambitious department at Catholic University (1958-1963), and during his tenure as director of the Latin American Centre for Advanced Musical Studies (1963-1971) his invited guests included Messiaen, Nono, Dallapiccola, and Xenakis. Ginastera's works from the '60s, including the opera Don Rodrigo (1963-1964), grew more varied in their methods and ambitious in their scope.nnGinastera worked actively as a composer and champion of new music despite considerable external obstacles; his political views twice put him at odds with the Perón government, which forced his resignation from positions at the National Military Academy and the National University of La Plata (he regained the latter position after Perón's defeat). Personal problems, including marital strife, stifled his productivity in the late '60s, but his divorce and subsequent marriage to cellist Aurora Natola, and his retirement to Switzerland after decades of teaching in Argentina's most prominent musical institutions, gave Ginastera his second wind; his last years were among his most fruitful. nnAlberto Portugheis was born in La Plata, Argentina, to parents of Russian and Rumanian descent. He studied in Buenos Aires with the celebrated Vincenzo Scaramuzza (who also taught Martha Argerich), in Geneva with Madeleine Lipatti, Louis Hiltbrand and Youra Güller. Less

In this programme organised like a filmed notebook, the pianist, in the intimate surroundings of his home, modestly recounts episodes from his life, and gives three lessons for the camera. Thus we see him curbing the virtuoso excesses of a Japanese girl student and tactfully correcting one of his pupils at the Geneva Conservatoire (where he succeeded Dinu Lipatti in 1949), reminding her that the pedal must be used with moderation, the tempo flexible, the rubato controlled, and the phrasing analysed precisely. All this is communicated with charm, simplicity, and above all the tact of an experienced artist who has thought long and hard and has played almost everything. A man with an open mind: the twentieth century has no secrets for him. Close to Stravinsky, Bartók, and Prokofiev, interested in Boulez and Stockhausen. Whatever the period or style, his interpretation always combines rigour and refinement.Full DVD available here:http://store.harmoniamundi.com/nikita-magaloff-virtuoso-and-teacher.html Less
