This video lecture from Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the preparation of Alkanes by two methods. Firstly from a special class of organo-metallic compounds called the Grignard Reagents (Alkyl magnesium halides) by their reaction with an active hydrogen containing compound like nitric acid or water. Secondly from a class of compounds containing carbonyl group at terminal carbon or otherwise, known as Aldehydes and Ketones. Their reduction (addition of hydrogen) yields alkanes and it takes place in the presence of suitable catalysts giving rise to two methods, Clemmenson’s reduction and Wolf-Kishner’s reduction. This video lecture from Carboxylic Acids (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the preparation of carboxylic acids by the oxidation of alcohols, aldehydes and ketones in the presence of acid dichromate and permanganate. Alcohols oxidize to carbonyl compounds first, primary alcohols to aldehydes and secondary alcohols to ketones. The aldehydes oxidize simply by hydrate formation initially followed by removal of hydrogen or oxidation in the elimination step. Ketones are difficult to oxidize and bond cleavage is involved following Popoff’s rule. Find more e-learning material and educational video lectures in Urdu at maktab.pk. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers general preparation methods for aldehydes and ketones. The oxidation of primary alcohols gives corresponding aldehydes i.e. methanols to methanal, ethanol to ethanal, propanol to propanal e.t.c. Secondary alcohols are more difficult to oxidize and they yield ketones. Tertiary alcohols are resistant towards oxidation and do not convert to carbonyl compounds but instead carry out an elimination reaction giving alkenes. Calcium salts of formic acid upon heating give acetaldehyde whereas calcium salt of acetic acid gives acetone or propanone. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the nomenclature of aldehydes and ketones. The aldehydes are named by replacing the corresponding name of alkane (-e replaced with –al) making alkanal. In ketones (-e is replaced with –one) making alkanone. The longest chain must contain the carbonyl group and the carbon of carbonyl group has to be counted while naming the corresponding alkane. In ketones, the location of carbonyl is specified by a number preceding the name of alkanone. Find more e-learning material and educational video lectures in Urdu at maktab.pk. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the oxidation reactions of ketones. Unlike aldehydes, ketones are very difficult to oxidize and only strong oxidizing agents like acidic dichromate and acidic permanganates oxidize ketones to carboxylic acids. The difficulty in oxidation is because of the sigma bond cleavage involved in the reaction which obeys Popoff’s rule (carbonyl group is retained by smaller alkyl group). The final product includes two different of carboxylic acids. Find more e-learning material and educational video lectures in Urdu at maktab.pk. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the reactivity of carbonyl compounds. The carbonyl group contains more electronegative oxygen atom which makes the bond polar in nature. The presence of double bond indicates a weaker pi bond which is prone to attack and hence carbonyl compounds give addition reactions which may be acid or base catalyzed depending on the reagent used. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the addition of Grignard Reagents to carbonyl compounds. These are organo-metallic compounds with an alkyl group which acts as a nucleophile and attacks the electrophilic carbon of the carbonyl group. The pi bond then attacks the positive part of Grignard reagent i.e.-MgX. This product is then hydrolyzed in the presence of an acid to give 2 products, one of which is simply an alcohol. This method allows for the conversion of any carbonyl group containing aldehyde or ketone into any other alcohol (primary, secondary or tertiary). This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the laboratory and industrial preparation of acetaldehyde or ethanal. In laboratory ethyl alcohol is oxidized with acidified dichromate solution and heated. Dry distillation of calcium salts of formic and acetic acid also yields acetaldehyde. Hydration of ethyne is another way of obtaing the same product. Wacker process is used industrially where ethylene is oxidized in air using palladium chloride catalyst over cupric chloride promoter. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers Cannizaro’s Reaction. It takes place in the absence of any alpha hydrogen atoms and is a disproportionation (self oxidation-reduction) reaction. Out of 2 molecules taking part in the reaction, one is oxidized to a carboxylic acid and the other is reduced into an alcohol. The detailed mechanism followed is explained in the lecture. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers Haloform reaction and Iodoform test. Methyl ketones and acetaldehyde (both containing a methyl on either side of the carbonyl- group) react with halogens in the presence of sodium hydroxide to give 4 products. 1. Haloform (tri halo methane), 2. Sodium salt of carboxylic acid, 3. Sodium halide salt, 4. Water. The formation of yellowish Iodoform helps distinguish between methyl ketones and other ketones. It also helps distinguish acetaldehyde from other aldehydes and methanol/ethanol from other primary alcohols. The detailed reaction mechanism is explained in the lecture. This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the basics of the addition reactions of ammonia derivatives (H2-N-G) with carbonyl compounds which is acid catalyzed Nucleophilic addition. Various ammonia derivatives are discussed along with their structures. The reaction steps include the protonation of oxygen to make carbon a stronger electrophile in the carbonyl group, followed by the attack of ammonia derivative (lone pairs of electrons and higher electronegativity of nitrogen makes it a nucleophile but still weak) on the electrophilic carbon atom. A proton shift then takes place from nitrogen to oxygen making water and other proton from nitrogen eliminate and a bond formation between carbon and nitrogen. The shape of final product is C=N-G.
