Astola Island, also known as Jezira Haft Talar (Urdu: جزیرہ ہفت تلار) or 'Island of the Seven Hills', is a medium-sized, uninhabited island in the Arabian Sea in Pakistan's territorial waters, some 25 km south of Pakistan's nearest coastline and 39 km southeast of the Pakistani fishing port of Pasni. Astola is Pakistan's largest offshore island and the only significant offshore island in the northern Arabian Sea. The area is about 6.7 km2 (0 sq mi). Administratively, the island is part of the Pasni subdistrict of Gwadar District in Balochistan province. History The island of Astola finds its first known mention in Arrian's account of Alexander's Admiral Nearchos, who was dispatched to explore the coast of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Azadi and the Persian Gulf in 325 BCE. According to Dr. AV Williams Jackson, "The seamen on board the ships of Nearchos, being superstitious, like the sailors of all ages and countries, were much frightened at the weird tales told about an uninhabited island, which Arrian calls Nosala, and is now known as Astola or Astalu. It lies nearly midway between Urmera and Pasni headlands, and is to this day as much an object of dread to the Med fisherman as it was long ago to the Greek sailors. Astola Island lies in the northern tip of the Arabian Sea, approximately 25 km south of Pakistan's Makran Coastline and approximately 39 km southeast of the Pakistani fishing port of Pasni. It is also the northernmost island of the Arabian Sea. Its geographical ... Less

www.mqm.org http GEO AAJ Kamran Khan kay Sath: Progress on Gwadar Port Project details with Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping MQM Senator Babar Khan Ghauri. The Port Singapore Authority (PSA) has decided to leave Gwadar Port due to non-handing over of allocated land required by the Authority for making the port fully operational, according to Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri. "The denial of land at Gwadar Port forced PSA to leave the port, which will be taken over by a Chinese company," the Federal Minister informed the Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping that met with Sardar Fateh Mohammad Hassani in the chair here on Tuesday. It was agreed in the MoU signed with PSA that the government would provide the required land to make the Gwadar Port fully operational, which was in the possession of Pakistan Navy and Coastal Guard. However, that commitment did not materialise, which led PSA to leave the port, said Ghauri, adding that the government had issued an NoC to PSA in this regard, which was going to sell its shares to a Chinese company. Europe, Oct 01: China’s growing ties with Pakistan are creating problems for the people of Balochistan. Both China and Pakistan are looking at their own economic and national security interests while keeping Balochistan on the edge of a sword. China has provided financial assistance of 220 million USD to build a deep-sea port at Gwadar in Balochistan. Now, China Harbour Engineering Co. Ltd (CHEC), a state owned company, will take over the Gwadar Port from Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) to convert it into an oil pipeline hub to augment its energy supplies from the Gulf. China will invest a further 10 billion USD to develop the port and manage its operations. Less

It's a port at the meeting point of the Arabian coast and the Persian Gulf. Pakistan's Gwadar port is a strategic location for trade. And in a move that has raised serious concerns for India -- the operations at Gwadar port have now been taken over by China. While China claims this is just a friendly move to help Pakistan, many believe that this latest development could be a sign of China and Pakistan trying to build naval bases to the east of the Indian Peninsula.
