Animal Farm is a British animated film by Halas and Batchelor, based on the book of the same name by George Orwell, that was published in England on August 17, 1945, and written during World War II. It was the first British animated feature released worldwide. Despite the title and Disney-esque animal animation, it is in fact a no-holds-barred adaptation of George Orwell's classic satire on Stalinism, with the animals taking over their farm by means of a revolutionary coup, but then discovering that although all animals are supposed to be equal, some are more equal than others.nnCheck out my first book of poetry on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Mystical-Poetry-Politics-mysticdave/dp/1448689082nnCheck out my blogs:nMystical Poetry and Politics: http://www.mysticalpoetryandpolitics.com/nMystical Musings and Politics: http://mysticalmusingsandpolitics.blogspot.com/nLive Mystic Music: http://livemysticmusic.blogspot.com Less

Flavio De Castilhos dreamed of making world class cheese in the beautiful high desert climate of Bend, Oregon. After a successful career in high tech, he relocated his family and launched a farmstead cheese operation. Using milk from the farm's herd of Saanen and Alpine goats, a small team of cheesemakers handcrafts an array of aged Gouda style cheeses and a new goat and cow milk ripened cheese called Jewel.nnThis video is part of the Oregon Cheese Guild producer profile series. In a campaign to drive a small family oyster farm out of business, the National Park Service and environmental groups have leveled many charges of serious environmental harm against the Drakes Bay Oyster Company in Marin County. A video produced by an independent production crew sheds light on the bogus data a nationally-known scientist discovered upon investigation and the effect this campaign has had on this family farm.nnThe federal government has spent millions on the effort to oust the oyster farm from the spot on Drakes Estero it has occupied for decades. The Secretary of the Interior is scheduled to decide the oyster farm's fate in the next few weeks. The video shows incredible evidence of a smear campaign, a small business in peril and a family reeling from accusations the National Academy of Sciences concluded have no basis in fact. Less

Dezeen and MINI World Tour: in our next movie from Milan, architect and designer Fabio Novembre takes us to a converted farm near the city centre and explains why he sees the project as an important response to Italy's ongoing economic crisis. nn"Milano used to be a place full of farms," Novembre explains. "Most of them were in the city centre, very close to the Duomo, and this was one of them."nnCalled Cascina Cuccagna, the farm is pressed-up against apartment buildings in the Porta Romana district of Milan, to the south-east of the city centre.nnNovembre explains that the eighteenth-century buildings had been derelict for many years, until they were restored and converted into a cultural centre in 2008 by a consortium of local companies and residents.nnHe believes this bottom-up approach to redevelopment is a "very interesting example of how Milan can evolve" in the face of a lack of government investment.nn"A group of citizens asked the city government, that is now without any money, to rent the place for 20 years," he says. "It's really a new way that we can approach the [economic] crisis as Italians. There is no public money anymore, so we have to really organise ourselves on a smaller scale to have different solutions for evolution."nnNovembre shows us round the new facilities, which include a restaurant and bar, organic grocery store, gallery and a community garden where the fruit and vegetables for the restaurant are grown.nnAll these facilities are available to the public and Novembre believes it is this local community spirit that makes the farm special: "The restaurant here is called Un Posto a Milano, which means 'a place in Milan' - that's the essences of this place, that's the spirit of this place."nnCascina Cuccagna also has a special place in Novembre's heart for another reason. "Fourteen years ago, exactly in this place, I met my wife," he reveals. "There used to be a very small, tiny restaurant here [where we met]. Now we are able to come here with our daughters and enjoy it all day long."nnWe drove out to Cascina Cuccagna in our MINI Cooper S Paceman.nnThe music featured is a track called Where are Your People? by We Have Band.nnSee more architecture and design movies at http://www.dezeen.com/movies Less

Read more design and architecture stories on www.dezeen.comnnGraduate designer Katharina Unger has designed a table-top insect breeding farm that allows people to produce edible fly larvae in their homes.nn"Farm 432 enables people to turn against the dysfunctional system of current meat production by growing their own protein source," said Unger.nnAs part of the project, she bred and ate black soldier fly larvae in a prototype system, then designed a machine to replicate the process on a domestic scale. "I ordered larvae and built up my own fly colony to see if the process works," she told Dezeen. It was very exciting to watch the larvae migrating up the ramp, new flies emerging, mating and laying eggs."nnIn her design for the farm, soldier fly larvae are dropped into a chamber at the top of the appliance, where they develop into adult flies and move to a larger chamber. Here they mate and produce larvae, which fall down into a "kindergarten" area, mature and become trapped in a harvesting pot, ready for consumption. A few of the harvested larvae are selected to be dropped back into the top of the machine and start the cycle again.nn"Black soldier fly larvae are one of the most efficient protein converters in insects, containing up to 42% of protein, a lot of calcium and amino acids," the designer adds. After 432 hours, 1 gram of black soldier fly eggs turns into 2.4 kilograms of larvae protein, so Unger predicts that people could harvest approximately 500 grams of larvae a week, producing two meals.nn"The larvae I bred have a very distinctive taste," she told us. When you cook them, they smell a bit like cooked potatoes. The consistency is a bit harder on the outside and like soft meat on the inside. The taste is nutty and a bit meaty."nnHer favourite recipe with the insects so far is larvae and tomato risotto: "I like to mix parboiled rice with wild rice together with the larvae, put a lot of tomato sauce in it and a bit of parmesan cheese. A bit of parsley or basil on top and you have a perfect meal."nn"With my design I am proposing a new lifestyle," the designer told Dezeen. "It´s about a potential new western culture of insect eating and breeding... It is really about making people see that there is a great variety of food on our planet that we rarely consider."nnUnger explained that by 2050 meat production will need to increase by 50 percent to meet population increase, predicting that because we already use one third of croplands for the production of animal feed, it will be necessary to develop alternative food sources and production methods.nnShe added that her system so far uses just one out of 1000 edible insects in the world and she wants to develop the idea further in collaborations with manufacturers and researchers.nnUnger completed the project whilst studying Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and was taught by Hartmut Esslinger of Frog and Fiona Raby of Dunne & Raby.nnSee more images on Dezeen: nhttp://www.dezeen.com/2013/07/25/farm-432-insect-breeding-kitchen-appliance-by-katharina-unger Less
