Starting at 07:00 local time the fighting continued for just over 14 hours before yielding six winners in six different weight categories, all of which were Swiss. With blunted horns, the animals fight one-on-one until one cow backs down, leading to its elimination. The last cow standing is crowned 'La Reine des Reines' (The Queen of Queens). Long cited as French, Belgians have launched a petition to get the humble fry recognised by the global body as one of mankind’s cultural treasures. The issue has even united the quarrelling French and Flemish speaking communities in the country. “There is a phenomenon we share, German-speakers, French-speakers, Dutch-speakers, and it’s a cone of fries but it’s also this culture which surrounds it. It’s a good product, but it’s a way of living, a ‘Belgitude,” explained Bernard Lefevre, National President of the Belgian Union of Fritkot owners UNAFRI. “A cone of potato chips is Belgium in miniature,” he added. A new outbreak of bird flu has been reported in southwest France and is confirmed to be spreading across the region in a fresh blow to the country’s foie gras heartland. France’s agriculture ministry said new cases of H5N8 avian influenza has been observed on a duck farm in the Tarn administrative department. Local authorities in Tarn said the virus had been detected on a second farm nearby and that some 7,000 ducks were to be culled in the area.
