A pizzeria in Moscow gave wings to its Margherita and Pepperoni take-outs by teaming up with Copter Express to deliver pizzas by drone on Monday. Equipped with built-in GPS and video cameras, the drone can fly as fast as 40 kmph (24 mph) and can carry up to five kilograms (11 pounds). An amateur video filmed on Tuesday shows what is believed to be Russian helicopters attacking positions held by the so-called Islamic State located in the Homs province between Palmyra and al-Qaryatain. The Syrian Army liberated al-Qaryatain from IS control in an operation that ended on Monday. The Christian town is around 100km (60 miles) west of Palmyra where army sappers from Russia's International Mine Action Centre are continuing to remove explosives from the roads leading to the ancient Syrian city. EIGHT men have landed a Turkish military helicopter in Greece and asked for asylum as the government squashes a bloody army coup. Greece's defence ministry has confirmed seven military personnel and one civilian landed the Blackhawk chopper in Alexandroupoli and asked for asylum. It is thought the "traitors" were senior plotters in last night's coup. which saw 161 people killed - including 47 civilians - and 1,154 injured. A senior Greek official said: "They are military officers up to the level of major." Authorities are processing the group's request for political asylum despite the Turkish government's requests for their return. The crew requested political asylum after landing the chopper in northern Greece, with local reports claiming they are rebels from the Turkish army faction. UK-based company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a new type of helicopter which they call a quadcopter. They have already manufactured a model, one third the size of a real one, and this is already popular with drone enthusiasts. But the team behind it say that this is only the beginning. They are confident that soon they’ll be able to test a real, full-sized one, controlled by a human rider. And they say the quadcopter is safer than a conventional helicopter. Chris Malloy, the managing director of Malloy Aeronautics Ltd, and the designer of the Malloy Hoverbike, said: “The reason we moved from the bi-copter design to the quadcopter design was because the technology has now moved to such a point that controlling a vehicle using independent thrust through the four motors of a quadcopter is much more efficient and cheaper now than it was when I first started this bi-copter design.” The small scale drone model has been marketed commercially as a way of raising funds to develop a larger version. But Chris Malloy is testing a tethered full-size prototype. He said: “The advantage that the hoverbike has over helicopters is that it can fly amongst trees safely. Rotor-strike is a major issue with helicopters, but this design eliminates rotor-strike by protecting the propeller blades from the ground as well as from airborne obstacles. The helicopter is inherently complex, but the hoverbike is simple. So, that makes it safer. And it’s built to be robust and be flown in environments that would present problems to a typical helicopter.” The team at Malloy say the hoverbike will be low cost, and that its size will make it a practical option for farmers, for search and rescue teams, for emergency services like ambulances, and loading cargo into confined spaces.   Less

Saw the LASO copter working in conjunction briefly with L.A. County Baywatch (the real one, not the TV crap) in a cliffside beach area that isn't that well-known. Pt. Dume is the former home to many famous celeb families (the Sheens, the Penns) and one of the highest-value real estate areas in California, and thus the world. Very nice mellow area, good beaches nearby, and everyone was pretty mellow.   Less

The market is huge when you consider 350 million photos are posted on Facebook, 95 million on Instagram, 400 million on Snapchat and 1.6 billion via WhatsApp every single day. The Photokina trade show in Cologne keeps the consumer in the picture. Rainer Fuhres is from the photo industry association: “Today’s younger generation is growing up in a totally different way and consider pictures as the most natural things in the world. An image is a main component of communication. It is only natural, that along with this daily exposure to images comes a desire to improve the quality of the pictures, to make better videos. In my opinion social media has done wonders for our industry. The change is a move away from digital. Classic cameras are struggling to find an audience when smart phones are produce such quality images. John Willenborg is the founder of Exolens:“The power of mobile phones now allows anyone, a film student, a cinematographer to make a film with some lenses and a mobile device and it no longer looks like it was shot on a phone.
