Belly Dancing: Figure 8 - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats. We are going to learn how to do figure 8's. And with the figure 8 again, my feet are going to be wider than my hips, I am going to angle my right hip forward and what I essentially want to do is draw a circle with the hip around each foot. So what I mean by that is once my right hip is pushed forward I am going to think about taking it in front of my right foot, to the side of the foot and back. Once I am here my left hip is now facing forward, I am going to transfer the weight and take that left hip forward, side and back. This is where people often get stuck, is how to transfer. Again think about switching the knee. I am going to bend the left knee which takes the right hip out to the side and back. Now bend the right knee which takes the left hip to the side and back. So when I smooth it out I have forward, side, back. Forward, side, back. Forward, side, back. And I am just very gently, very comfortably switching the knees back and forth. Keeping the chest lifted, and sliding the hips forward, side, back. Forward, side, back. You should feel very comfortable, very massaging for the spine, very low impact. And once you have it you can add some arms. Just bring a little more life in to the movements. You can take it a little bit smaller, a little bit faster. So now we are going to reverse the direction of that figure 8 and go back to front. We just did forward to back so if you imagine with starting with that hip back I am going to push it forward in front of me and then transfer the weight, bending the opposite knee. That hip goes back to forward, back to forward. Same idea, drawing an 8 with the pelvis and that transition I am switching the knees. Very loose, very comfortable. Back, side, forward. Back, side, forward. Back, side, forward. And again I can vary the tempo. This should be very loose, very easy on the body. Back to front, back to front. And again I can play with... Less

Belly Dancing: K Step - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats. Now, we are actually going to learn how to do another travel step and belly dance called the K step. And the reason they call it the K step is because your feet are sort of mimicking the shape of a K. So if I take my left foot, this is going to be the straight line of the K. The right foot is going to go forward on a corner, and then back to the other corner. So it is going to go forward and back. Notice that the hip comes with me. It is not just the foot moving, right? That would not be belly dance. We have to add the hip. Forward and back, and forward and back. And if I use my right foot as the straight line of the K, the left foot is going to go on a forward diagonal, back to neutral, and on the back corner. So it is forward and back and forward and back. And I can take this as a travel step and go sideways with it. So if I am traveling to the right, my left foot is the anchor, and the right foot is going forward and back. So I am doing the weight transfer, to the foot, neutral, and to the back foot. So it is forward and back, and, forward and back, and, forward and back, and. So, if you notice, my left foot slides in the direction that I am traveling, every time I put weight on it. So, let us try it in the other direction now. My left foot is going to go forward and back. Right foot is going to take little steps in this direction, every chance it gets. So forward, cheating that right foot in, and back. Again, the right foot steps in. Forward on the left, back on the left. Forward on the left, back on the left. And that is it. Now, once you have that, and you feel comfortable with it, you can add a little bit of a shimmy with your hips. You can make it smaller, faster. Again, you can play with this movement, and see what you can come up with. I am just going to show you with a little bit of a shimmy added. Forward, back, forward, back, forward, back. Belly Dancing: Snake Arms - part of the women's fitness video series by GeoBeats. Now we are going to learn how to do a belly dance snake arm, one of my favorites. So, the first thing we have to do is get our arms down by our sides. A lot of people when they relax, their arms are facing like this. So, you want to open up from the pec, rotate the shoulder. Perfect. Now, I think about having the side of my pinky on the top of the thigh. I am going to slightly lift the shoulder. Elbow is going to go out to the side. The wrist is going to break away, and this is where you feel like you are holding an invisible basketball. And that elbow, imagine there is a string lifting that elbow up. Then, before I lower my arm, the wrist does a little push and the fingertips are now facing up. I am going to push my arm down. When I say push I mean I am fighting gravity. I am actually contracting the bicep. The more resistance you have in your snake arm, the better they look. If I let gravity win it looks kind of unfulfilled, let us say. So, shoulder, elbow, wrist, finger. Pushing down the shoulder, engaging the bicep, fingertips point up. Shoulder, elbow, wrist, tuck in your basketball. That elbow is going to continue on the up, and then pushing down. Exactly. Now, you can do this at a very small or a very large, depending on what the music calls for. You can play with that variety. Let us try it on the other side. So, the shoulder is going to lift just a little bit, just to allow the elbow to rotate out to the side. Wrist, tuck in your ball. Then, imagine that you are painting with the back of the hand on the up, and the palm of the hand paints down. Good. It is also really important to feel like your fingers look pretty here. You do not want to just sort of have a claw hand and not think about what the fingers are doing. The beauty is in the details with the snake arms. So, I am going to reach up and lower down. OK. So, that is all well and good, doing one at a time... Less
