A 3D view of what an iPad sees in its first two minutes in the Bug Farm.nAfter a quick look at the instructions -- a handful of notes on the floor -- the player is set upon by aggressive bugs. They're harmless -- but they love people and their computers, and always head for the nearest one. When they encounter a smaller bug of a different species, they noisily eat it. And if a bug falls off the table, it squeals. nnYou can distract them by throwing out a Bait Ball -- brightly colored bug candy -- from your screen. The Throwables in the Bug Farm scene are:n1 finger tap -- an orange Ping Pong ball that will push a bug away or knock it off the tablen2 finger tap -- ant (helpful for feeding other kinds of bugs)n3 finger tap -- spidern4 finger tap -- Bait BallnThese are shortcuts -- you can throw ANY Pantomime Playground object by pressing the center of the screen to bring up the Menu, and selecting a new Throwable for the 1 finger tap.nnIn the video, the user, pursued by a mantis, taps balls to keep it away, and flattens an ant under the iPad by tipping it flat against the table. Finally he throws out a Bait Ball to distract it. Then he starts feeding ants to a spider and it begins to grow. Soon it finds the Bait Ball and begins eating all the other bugs that go after it.nnNote that with Pantomime you're not just seeing the 3D world THROUGH the screen. You're seeing things closer to you than the iPad too! See the big mantis in shadow looking through the screen with you? Soon the user turns and it's in front of us, and before long the spider munches that too.nn(Two things worth noting when viewing first-person footage from mobile devices immersed in virtual worlds: because the recorded video is strictly landscape it can look jittery or cockeyed; whereas in the live in-person experience, Pantomime ensures the image is always perfectly upright, however you move. And for the same reason, when recording such video we avoid many of the most exciting interactions -- tumbling, turning the device diagonally, paddling from a portrait view, walking on alternate corners -- so the online video isn't sideways, crooked or bumpy looking when played back. The 3D printer build workshop led by jimmi~research and hosted at DMC was an intensive introduction to the world of 3D printing and digital fabrication held January 21-23, 2015 in the DMC MakerSpace.nThe Practical: During the three day workshop students with varying levels of experience were led through the building of their own 3D printer based on an open-source design. The workshop provided all necessary software, direction, and resources to begin 3D printing, to maintain the printer, modify, and become contributors to the open source community.nThe Poetics: For jimmi~research, the hosting of build workshops is critical for sharing their research and building a community of users and contributors. This printer is not an appliance (!) but a form of education, an outlet for creative problem solving, and is one more tool in the studio, lab, concert hall, etc. While many participants are interested in a plastic-printing 3D printer, jimmi~research is most interested in expanding the parameters of what is within the realm of digital fabrication. Collaborators have converted their jimmi~research 3D printers into bio printers, ceramic printers, inkjet printers, instruments, performance tools, robotic painting machines. Current 3d-printers are usually technical, business-like objects, and with this project we wanted to show that also in this category it is possible to create a product which not only works great, but feels right in the food-centered environments where it is intended for.n nThe XOCO 3d-printer is based on a polar coordinate system with a rotating buildplate and a single pillar from which both printhead and glass cover are suspended. Everything in the design contributes to giving the process of printing a visually open impression, adding to the experience of creating your customized sweets. After those experiments we can optimise quantity of facial scans needed for full facial rig.nIn the end, everything is piped into standard rig, all the blending of shapes, displacement maps, colour is done by the system. The 3D Copypod is a 3d scan booth that can instantly digitize subjects of a wide range of sizes. Objects are surrounded by a spherical array of over one hundred fixed focal length DSLR cameras. Each camera is attached to a node of the Hoberman-inspired, isokinetic structure. With minimal adjustment, the 3D Copypod can contract to scan small objects and expand large enough to scan a group of people. Folding panels that are lit from the interior enclose the structure of the 3d Copypod to ensure a shadowless photography environment.nDigital models are constructed from the photographic data to produce high resolution 3d prints. With the snap of a camera even subjects in motion can be captured in high quality and full color.   Less

In most of my work I like to bring depth to a 2D composition. Either with light, depth of field or skewing and parallaxing.nnHere is a scene I broke down to show how I proceed in order to give the illusion of 3D.nIn this scene from John Kahrs Short film "JUNE" for LYFT, only the character is CG. The rest was created in Photoshop by the artist Arthur Chaumay.nnI created a subtle push in and, by parenting the kitchen counter to the back wall, and applying the same scaling keys, It translated into a parallax that started to give the illusion of 3D.nThen I skewed the counter surface and counter-skewed the reflections of each object seating on it to make sure these reflections would stay straight while the counter's top changes perspective.nnThis scene is rather simple in appearance but it was one of the most complex I had to create on this project.   Less
