With a debt crisis now in its fifth year, Greece has become used to painful, drawn-out negotiations with international lenders. But to many Greeks already hit hard by half a decade of austerity, the latest tax hikes and pension cuts demanded by creditors have a particularly bitter taste. “The average Greek family has lost over 40 percent of its income during the crisis, and some families even more,” said Napoleon Maravegias, Professor at the School of Economics and Political Sciences of the University of Athens. “Therefore you realise that no Greek government or political party can convince the people that more austerity measures like these are a solution to their problems,” he told euronews. Creditors are asking Greece to increase value-added tax (VAT) rates on a number of goods and services including electricity, which would see VAT rise from 13 percent to 23 percent – at a time when some struggling Greek families are already unable to pay their bills, and living in the dark. In Athens, one man complained: “A 23 percent VAT on electricity would create a domino effect of price increases for many other goods. In these difficult times such policies are completely inappropriate.” Greece’s pension system has for its part been crumbling under the crisis and it’s among the most expensive in Europe. But more pension cuts would be unacceptable to many. “I have suffered too many cutbacks in my pension already. Enough is enough, there’s nothing left to be taken from us,” said one woman. Recent government figures show nearly 60 percent of retired Greeks live with pensions of 700 euros a month or less, while 45 percent of pensioners hover around the poverty line and depend on charity to survive. Our reporter in Athens Stamatis Giannisis said: “Claiming that Greece is facing a humanitarian crisis, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his radical left Syriza party are refusing to give in to creditors demands, saying additional austerity measures would do nothing more than deal another blow to the country’s flailing economy.”   Less

Some public service workers have walked out while pharmacists are also on strike angered at plans to de-regulate their profession. “Unfortunately it is no longer in our hands anymore – that is it’s no longer in the people’s hands. Through necessity we, or they will pass the reforms in parliament and we will bear the burden,” said one woman while another added: “We will wait. Just one person can not fix a country in five months which has been destroyed for years. We had defaults again and again, this didn’t just happen yesterday.” Wednesday brought the now familiar scenes with queues outside cash machines across the country while the banks remain closed. Traffic ground to a standstill as protesters made their way to the Greek Parliament. “This is the first general strike and the first major anti-government protest since the Syriza party’s landslide victory in last September’s snap general election, but with the pressure from the country’s lenders it is unlikely that it will be the last one,” explained euronews correspondent Stamatis Giannis in Athens. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has had to accept unpopular terms for Greece’s third bailout of 86 billion euros. The unions dubbed the 24-hour walk out “the mother of all battles” and it came as the international lenders met in Athens to review compliance with the latest package. “This rally is a message to the government that the people are aware and on alert,” said one man. “They have to find other ways and equivalent measures to avoid pension and wage cuts and provide better health care and social security,” opined one woman at the demonstration while another added: “We must keep our children here, to work here, to create families here. Today we fight to keep Greece alive.” Public services and transport links were disrupted with metro, ferry and suburban rail services shut down. Public hospitals operated with skeleton staff while pharmacists, doctors, teachers and bank employees also walked off the job. Police fired tear gas at a group of protesters who broke away from the march to hurl petrol bombs. Three policemen were injured in a separate attack and three people detained. Analysts said the walk out illustrated the political juggling act Tsipras is trying to pull off with many in his party believing industrial action would strengthen his hand in talks with lenders.   Less
