Police in Saudi Arabian raid a suspected terrorist’s house in Riyadh as part of a major security operation. The government claims to have uncovered an al Qaeda militant group with links to “ extremist elements” in the region. The suspects are thought to have been planning attacks in the Kingdom. Interior MInistry spokesperson General Major Mansour al-Turki declared the operation a success:“The results of an investigation and security follow up has shown how widespread this network is and the existing links with radical elements in Syria and Yemen. Sixty-two suspects have been arrested for their connection to the revealed terrorist organisation – one Palestinian, one Yemeni, one Pakistani and the rest are all Saudis.”Put on show was a haul of computers, money and weapons police claim to have found at several targeted locations.Saudi Arabia is increasingly concerned that Syria’s civil war is radicalising more of its own citizens. However International groups say a new “anti-terrorism” law is allowing for the detaining and jailing of people as militants for criticising the country’s ruling family. Less

A new report has revealed that a majority of the recent ISIL terrorist attacks in Iraq have been conducted by Saudia nationals. The Saudi-based newspaper Al-Hayat says ISIL's Saudi militants have been behind 60 percent of the bomb attacks in Iraq. Just in September and early October alone, at least 21 bomb attacks were recorded. The paper says more than half of them were done by Takfiri terrorists from Saudi Arabia. Such acts mostly targeted military bases and checkpoints in different Iraqi provinces, killing scores of civilians. This comes as some analysts believe the Arab kingdom is one of the main training centers and logistic supporters of Takfiri terrorists in the region. Less

At least 107 people died and more than 230 people were injured when a crane collapsed in the Muslim holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The huge red crane crashed into a part of the Grand Mosque - the largest in the world - that was filled with worshippers at the time. The head of Saudi Arabia's civil defence said strong winds and heavy rains had caused the collapse. Mecca is currently preparing for the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive in the Saudi city from all over the world later this month. The collapse happened at 17:23 local time (14:23 GMT), said Director-General of the Saudi Civil Defence Authority, Lt Sulayman Bin-Abdullah al-Amr. It happened at a time when many worshippers were there for Friday prayers. The toll for the dead and injured, tweeted by the Civil Defence Authority (in Arabic), continued to rise throughout the evening. Less

Saudi Arabia is globally recognized for three things. One, deserts form a major part of the geography, two the country is a top producer of oil and three, the country has a fiercely conservative government and society. But the third notion is not necessarily true and is subject to change and that change is now knocking on Saudi Arabia’s door. Because even though the government has conservative regulations, that forbid basic women’s rights, there is also a growing segment of the society that is asking for change. Especially among the youth of the country. But this reformist view is also shared by many of the top figures in the House of Saud. Despite all of this, the country has not implemented any meaningful change. So what exactly is holding Saudi Arabia back? Less
