As we start of the Year of the Sheep, we are celebrating first moments of life with gorgeous twin lambs, Reuben and Summer. This is how life should begin for ALL lambs. Thank you for your Farm Sanctuary support.nnHere are three things you should know about lambs like Reuben and Summer and why we are so happy they were born at Farm Sanctuary and not in an industrial setting:nn· Sheep used for meat in the U.S. are typically slaughtered when they are very young, because consumers prefer lamb. A lamb is typically slaughtered when he six to eight months old, a tiny fraction of his natural lifespan.nn· Most sheep and lambs are “tail-docked” within a few weeks of birth to reduce the build up of fecal matter around their backside. This involves either cutting off the tail or fastening a tight rubber ring around the appendage until it rots and falls off. Lambs exhibit signs of pain when subjected to either method. Tail docking can also lead to chronic pain and an increase in the occurrence of rectal prolapse.nn· A sheep’s wool production naturally declines with age. In the wool industry, sheep with decreased wool production are sent to slaughter. In Australia, the source of most of the world’s wool, these sheep are typically exported to Middle Eastern countries by sea, enduring grueling journeys of up to three weeks. The movie presents the laparoscopic and transanal excision of large lower and mid-rectal deep endometriotic nodules: the Rouen techniquennThe surgical management of deep endometriotic nodules infiltrating the lower and mid-rectum is challenging. There is increasing evidence suggesting that the radical surgery based on colorectal resection may be responsible for postoperative digestive functional complaints related to rectal removal, such as distal constipation, increase in frequency of bowel movements or anal incontinence. In 2009, in response to these challenges, we introduced a new technique using the Contour® TranstarTM-STR5G (Ethicon EndoSurgery Inc., Cincinnati, OH, USA) in combined laparoscopic and transanal full thickness disc excision of endometriotic nodules infiltrating the low- and mid-rectum. The contour stapler is a device which was basically developed to perform stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) a surgical procedure used since 2004 in the treatment of obstructed defecation syndrome caused by internal rectal prolapse or rectocele. The STARR procedure aims to improve rectal function and involves circumferential resection of the full thickness of redundant rectal wall and restoration of continuity. As the contour stapler simultaneously cuts and staples the rectal wall, no other instruments are required to perform transanal resection. In 2009, the use of the stapler was extended to cases of deep endometriotic nodules involving the low- and mid-rectum. The procedure firstly requires deep shaving of the rectum involving the nodule, resulting in removal of 80 to 90% of the rectal nodule. Microscopical endometriotic foci remaining in the thin area of the rectal wall, which was previously shaved, can then be removed by transanal route using the contour stapler. nnThe procedure presented was performed live at the 2nd European Congress of Endometriosis, Berlin, November 28-30, 2013.
