This time around I brought his sister Autumn-Rose into the fold and got ambitious with the above video :).nnFirst off, eternal gratitude to Bill Ratner and Mary McDonald-Lewis, the original Flint and Lady Jaye, who generously donated their time and talent to bring life to a concept that seemed impossible when I came up with it, and delivered narration that succeeded beyond my greatest hopes.nnnA few notes on the medical specifics within: Nothing in this video is exaggerated; it reflects the best of our knowledge of their current states, though "the best of my knowledge" would be interpreted as the knowledge of a dedicated amateur at best. Autumn-Rose is fairly seriously vision-impaired; she does, however, get around pretty well with her almost comically oversized glasses. (For those who know such numbers, her spherical rating is +9.75, which is well into the territory of "off-the-charts insane" in my book.) nnI don't pretend to understand the science of audiology well enough to give solid numbers on Armand's hearing. What I can say for certain is that he's lost more than half his hearing, maybe two-thirds, and hearing aids restore a significant chunk of it. nnYou know, all this stuff and I didn't even mention that Armand does all this running, jumping, climbing and riding in ankle-high leg braces and derotational straps all the way up to his waist.nnThe survival rate circa 2009 for stage-IV neuroblastoma was about 35 percent; it dropped to 8 to 14 percent if you had a number of special circumstances, all of which applied to Armand. He went through a number of clinical trials, including an experimental antibody which worked so well in trials that it quickly became the standard treatment and is expected to nearly double the survival rate to around 65 percent. This is based on the best of my current non-expert understanding of the science, so please don't quote me in your research papers.nnI do not exaggerate even slightly about Autumn-Rose and time and space — she's a walking reality distortion field. Sometimes I'll be looking for a lost thing for an hour and she will gingerly pull it out of a spot I KNOW I checked four times. The reason you see her plastic ninja sword in only a few shots is because it vanished from right next to her seat and couldn't be found despite my best efforts. I fully expect her to toddle in carrying it any moment now.nn"The Silence and the Darkness" is both appropriate and ironic; it reflects our running inside joke that the kids have one good set of senses between the two of them, and also the fact that despite their challenges, you would almost never tell. He can still hear me whisper "hey, want some ice cream?" across a room (I still have no idea how) and yet sometimes misses stuff that's sitting right in front of him. (The phrase "are we sure it's his ears and not his eyes that are the problem?" is a frequent one in our household.) He may not hear very well and she may not see very well, but they are anything but silent and dark. The deity is bathed in milk and dressed in new clothes. Deities of Bal Gopala, or Krishna as an infant, are placed in miniature cradles made of gold or silver and worshipped. The sound of Shankhas (conches) and chants in praise of the Lord fill the air. The temples are brightly decorated with flowers, shimmering streamers of golden and silver coloured paper and multi-coloured lights etc.Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight, so the Puja (prayer ceremony) for Janmashtami is also performed late at night. Devotees fast throughout the day (some even do so without consuming a single drop of water) and offer prayers at night. They congregate at local Krishna temples. Offerings of milk, Kheer, sweets, fruits and also gold jewellery are made to the Lord, after which the devotees break their fast by consuming the Holy Prasad (sweet food). During the evening, to enhance the experience of the festival, a number of stalls are set up where young children are seated and dressed up as Lord Krishna or other mythological characters, some of them are coloured blue all over (representing the skin colour of the Lord). The costs of ecological overspending are evident every day in the form of deforestation, drought, biodiversity loss and the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Ecological overspending also can put nations at more economic risk. Without sufficient resources, it is hard to operate an economy. Or we have to import more which has costs as well.nCarbon emissions from fossil fuel use are a big part of today’s Footprint. Today, humanity’s carbon footprint makes up 60% of the world’s total Ecological Footprint. nBut there is good news: In December 2015, nearly 200 nations committed to reducing carbon emissions as part of the Paris Climate Agreement.nIn addition to nations taking action, [2:11] , each one of us has the power to help reverse the trend of overshooting our planet’s resources. A 1962 Philco computer ran in NORAD's Cheyenne Mountain defense until 1980.nnPhilco was bought by Ford in 1961. Phillips Electronics purchased Philco from Ford in 1981, primarily for the name brand. By then Philco was pretty nonexistent as a big name brand, but they owned the Phillips trademark in the United States. Phillips occasionally uses the Philco name today for products and has licensed it out to other OEMs to produce TVs and digital TV converter boxes. This is a modern trend where companies having nothing to do with the original company trade off of an old-school name, much like the Westinghouse brand of TVs and monitors.nMore than computers in the futurenn1999 AD talked about other things in the future than just computing. It discussed things we'd recognize today as big screen plasma TVs, microwave ovens, and frozen food. Some of the things it didn't get right were the flying cars, modular homes, and the basic culture.nn----------------nnMany visionaries who tried to forecast what daily life would be like for future generations made the mistake of simply projecting existing technologies as being bigger, faster, and more powerful. They often failed to anticipate that future technologies might take very different forms, might be put to previously unconsidered uses, and might accompany (or even help bring about) significant social changes.nnThe video clip shown above — an excerpt from a 1967 Philco-Ford production entitled "Year 1999 A.D.," — did a fairly good job of anticipating some ways (if not the specific forms) in which technology might be used in daily life more than three decades in the future. Concepts such as "fingertip shopping," an "electronic correspondence machine," and others envisioned in this video anticipate several innovations that became commonplace within a few years of 1999: e-commerce, webcams, online bill payment and tax filing, electronic funds transfers (EFT), home-based laser printers, and e-mail.nnAs noted, although the technological concepts expressed in the video may be familiar to us, the specific forms used to realize them are somewhat different than their common modern implementations:nnThe "fingertip shopping" the wife engages in imagines the shopper remotely controlling cameras placed in stores to scan merchandise rather than working with virtual representations of stores (i.e.websites).nnThe "household monitor screen" isn't so much a webcam as it is a simple closed-circuit video security system.nnThe bills and tax forms the husband works with are scanned images of paper forms rather than electronic forms.nnThe "electronic correspondence machine" (e-mail) depends on the user's writing messages by hand with a pen and a stylus rather than typing them with a keyboard and monitor.nnThe concepts are nonetheless relatively well-expressed, even if they don't quite match up with some of the finer points of modern technologies. However, the video exemplifies the common flaw of anticipating technological changes but not societal changes — the daily life it depicts is firmly rooted in the mid-20th century American model of women as stay-at-home child rearers and shoppers, and men as breadwinners and heads of household.
