Just finished building my 40W(!!!) laser shotgun!!! The output of this laser is complete insanity, and is made up of 8 parallel 5W laser beams totaling to 40W. The parallel beams are manipulated with lenses, sort of like how a choke modifies the spread of a shotgun blast.nnThe massive diode array is powered by a huge lithium polymer battery pack (capable up dumping 250A) and the laser array is regulated by a whopping 24 LM317 drivers. nnThis is definitely the craziest thing I have ever built, but I hope to beat this invention with something even crazier before too long. :D Less

NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) will capture a large boulder from the surface of an asteroid and transport it to a cislunar orbit. One of the mission risks relates to the unknown geotechnical properties and strength of the asteroid regolith and boulder, respectively.nnThe Shotgun system reduces this risk by firing small projectiles (“balls”) at the surface of the asteroid or boulder. If a ball impacts regolith, it will create a crater whose size is a function of regolith strength and density. If a ball impacts a coherent boulder, it will bounce back at a certain speed, whose value is proportional to rock strength. If the rebound speed cannot be measured, hollow balls packed with retroreflectors (similar to paintballs) could be used instead. The shell of such balls can be designed to crack open and release retroreflectors when impacting rock above the threshold strength required for successful boulder retrieval. Less

Two armed men made off with "thousands of dollars" after robbing the Kirra Sports Club in Gold Coast, Australia Wednesday night. The robbers terrorized the staff and 15 patrons with a hammer and a sawed-off shotgun. An elderly female patron was threatened with the hammer, a female employee was forced to the floor and the reception staff was forced into the office. The club manager said, "They were making a lot of noise and pointing a gun at our faces and forced us to open the safe. The young fella (a 20-year-old staffer) did the right thing - we didn't want any heroes." He said the thieves shoved but did not assault the young staffer adding, "They don't need to be that physical when they've got a gun in their hand. It was all over in about two minutes." This was the third armed robbery at the club since 2011. In June 2011 robbers tied up the staff. The club was hit with another armed robbery in December 2012. Three other robberies occurred after hours since 2006. "We're uninsurable. No one wants to come near us," said the manager. "The club's in a pickle financially. After the last robberies, the members rallied around and we're hoping they'll band together again. It's pretty tough times out there economically at the moment." The bandits were described as Pacific Islanders. Less
